Hosting Hotline: Tricks for Avoiding Pet Smells in Your STR (Episode 344)

Fighting Back Against Wet Dog Smell In Your Vacation Rental Listing

Welcome back to the Hosting Hotline! This is an Ask Me Anything where each week we’ll answer your questions on Airbnb, STRs, real estate, and everything in between.

Samantha asks:

We recently started our short-term rental business and we currently have two rentals down at the beach. We are allowing pets at both of them because we’re dog lovers ourselves. Our first guest had two dogs, and when we went in afterward, we noticed the scent of a dog. Do you recommend using any products, or staying away from scented products?

6 Tips for Avoiding Pet Smells in Your Airbnb Rental Property

Avoid Scented Products: It’s better to not use scented products as they might be perceived as covering up other smells and can cause allergies to flair up.

Proper Furnishings: Use washable covers for furniture and beds to make cleaning easier and more effective – and have plenty of backups for quick turnovers.

Pet-Specific Supplies: Provide guests with specific towels for pets to use, especially when coming from the beach, to avoid wet dog smells.

Regular Cleaning: Encourage the use of vacuums like Roombas by guests during their stay and ensure thorough cleaning by the staff, including the use of pet-safe cleaning products.

Ventilation: Keep windows open during the turnover where possible to air out the space effectively.

Use Enzyme Cleaners: Use cleaning products that contain enzymes to break down and neutralize pet odors.
